Beach Jogging

Getting up at the crack of dawn and going for a jog on the beach when it is calm and deserted can be the most peaceful and serene moment of your day. Beach jogging can also be a more challenging workout than a typical run on a treadmill or pavement. Before you go for a jog on the beach here are some things you may want to consider:

  • Get a light weight pair of running shoes which you don’t mind getting dirty.
  • Begin with a warm-up and some stretching.
  • If you are new to beach jogging, start out by running on wet sand. After you have gotten used to the difference of pavement and wet sand, add dry sand in variations.
  • Once you have enough experience running on the beach sand, try barefoot running. Running barefoot builds up the muscles in your feet, making them stronger.
  • Don’t over do it. Running on sand is a very different experience from running on a typical flat surface, you could seriously injure your knees and ankles if you ignore your body signs.

If you are jogging on the beach past Boardwalk Plaza, stop in and say ‘hello’!

The History of Surfing

Noted as one of the top ten most dangerous sports, the dangers are often dismissed for the thrill of the towering walls of clear blue water and skill associated with surfing.

Surfing was not always such a popular sport, although some may argue that it was the Peruvian fisherman, popular theory says that it was invented by the Polynesian population which eventually filled the islands of Hawaii. Kings would show off my surfing on long balsa boards, while everyone else used smaller boards called Alaia.

In 1779 Lieutenant James King wrote about surfing during Captain James Cook’s expedition, this would be the first time in which surfing was introduced to the western world. However, soon after Europeans began to invade Hawaii, imposing their beliefs and banning surfing putting it at the edge of extinction.

It was not until 1907 that surfing was brought back a truly made popular in America. American writer, Jack London, wrote about two Waikiki surfers, George Freeth and Duke Kahanamoku and published it in the U.S. Upon the instant success, Freeth moved to California and coined as ‘the man who can walk on water’.

From there the rest is history, surfing hit it big on the mainland, dominating the water sport, and adding “aloha” to everyone’s vocabulary. Surfing even made it all the way to Rehoboth Beach, where you can take surf lessons at places like Rehoboth Beach Boarding School.

Help Keep Our Beaches Clean

Rehoboth Beach was recently recognized as one of only a small number of the cleanest beaches in the United States. Sadly, many other beaches have been contaminated by pollution. Approximately 80% of it being land based pollution which has devastating effects on marine life, and makes humans sick. Fortunately, we can make a profound impact by simply making small changes when we go to the beach. Here are five provided from the Clean Beaches Coalition:

  • If you carry it in, carry it out. Do not leave trash behind.
  • Do not tread on the dunes, this will prevent beach erosion.
  • Respect wildlife and plants.
  • Clean up after your pets.
  • Use public restrooms, not the water.

Thank you for helping to keep Rehoboth Beach as one of the cleanliest beaches in the U.S.!

Picnic with a Twist

Location plays a vital role in the moments you share with your family and friends, so why not make it a memorable one? This summer we suggest packing a picnic and heading for the beach—the Rehoboth Beach that is!

Forget the ham sandwiches and beach volleyball for this picnic, and add a little pizzaz. Instead of throwing together the stereotypical meal, pack something worth remembering. Pack Oprah’s picnic meal of fresh lemonade, tomato feta salad, grilled lemon chicken with satay dip and Oreo crunch brownies. Click here for the recipes.

For games, try something a bit more creative like Ping Pong Ball Race. For this game you must dig one channel for each person, place a ping pong ball at one end, the first person to blow it to the other wins.

Another enjoyable game for the hot days is the Splash Game. Have one player draw a number, once he remembers the number he fills up a bucket of water and stands in the center of the circle of people. Each person must guess a number, if the number is the one the person chose they will get splashed with the water, if everyone guesses and the number is still not chosen the person must throw the water on themselves!

Read more for other games and activities.

Hope you enjoy your summer picnic. Come join us at the Boardwalk Plaza Hotel beach!

Story Book ‘Message in a Bottle’ Becomes Reality

Exactly three years ago today, Darin Winkler and his children found a bottle washed up on the shore. Assuming that it was trash, Winkler picked it up to throw it away, but noticed a piece of paper snuggly tucked wedged inside. Could it be? A message in a bottle? Yes, it seemed too fantastic to be true, it was the stuff people found in books or movies but not in real life.

Sure enough though, Winkler opened the bottle containing a message from an Emmett Presnell dated 1913. Through major research Winkler was able to trace Presnell’s history and track down his relatives!

This summer visit the Boardwalk Plaza and bottle your message and send it out for someone to find!
